Ultimate Striped Socks

My latest and probably craziest adventure in dyeing sock yarn and my newest most favorite socks.

Pattern: Vanilla Striped socks with afterthought heel
Yarn: Alize Superwash, 75% wool, 25% nylon, 50 g, hand dyed
Needle: 2.5 mm
Time to knit: 5 days

My process: wound the yarn into two-strand ball and soaked it in water. Brought some water with vinegar to boil on the stove, added the first dye (very small quantities of water and dye) and dipped the first 5 m of yarn (approx.) Waited for the yarn to exhaust the dye, took it out of the water into a dish, added the next dye and dipped the next 5 m of yarn. Meanwhile, the previous dyed piece of yarn had cooled and I wound it into a ball. Thus repeated the process until the entire yarn was dyed - 26 different colors. Changed the water with vinegar after every 4-5 dyes. Separated the colors when winding the freshly dyed pieces of yarn with stretch foil (probably unnecessary precaution, but didn't want to risk dye transfer while the yarn was still warm and unwashed).

  1. I will have to Google Bulgarian pig's feet. Patty shared her Polish Bubbah used to make a dish with that ingredient. Chinese has a plain version also.

    1. The Bulgarian recipe uses lots of garlic, pig's feet and ears, salt and red pepper.

  2. I'm really loving the results of your dyeing experiments!

These socks are superb - I love how the colours are bright and cheerful, but not at all gaudy.
